What Lies Across the Water: The Real Story of the Cuban Five is currently in development as a major motion picture.
Canadian producer Barrie Dunn, best known for his role in bringing the cult series Trailer Park Boys to the small and big screens — the television series has been sold to more than 30 countries, and there have been four Trailer Park Boys movies — acquired an option on the book even before it was published.
Dunn, whose productions — including the feature film Afghan Luke and the TV miniseries Canada Russia 1972 — have been nominated for numerous awards, was named the co-recipient of the Atlantic Film Festival award for Outstanding Contribution to the Film and Television Industry. In September 2014, Barrie was a member of Telefilm’s Canadian delegation at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Since acquiring the rights to the story, Dunn has traveled twice to Havana — most recently in July 2015 — to meet with the members of the Cuban Five and their families to discuss the project.
