The 1989 collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba’s chief benefactor, decimated Cuba’s economy, leading to chronic fuel and food shortages. Conditions became so awful for most Cubans that in 1992, according to one government survey, the average Cuban man lost 20 pounds from his body weight because he simply couldn’t get enough to eat.
